    Pascal vs Maxwell **same clocks**

This confirms my view that 980Ti will remain a great card at least until Volta makes an appearance.

Looking for ultra wide 3440x1440 benchmarks

3440x1440 is the sweet spot for resolution and performance with a single decent GPU imo. Running an OC 980Ti. No plans to upgrade this year.

Windows laptop with MacBook Pro like trackpad

This new Sammy has a multi-touch trackpad. Not sure if it matches all the features on a Mac: http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/windowsexperience/archive/2011/03/22/video-first-impressions-of-the-amazing-new-samsung-900x-premium-ultrathin.aspx It sounds a lot like a PC equivalent of the...

Why to boy Games via Steam

There are a small minority of games which have additional DRM. This is always clearly listed on the game info page. If download limits are a problem then don't buy these games and hopefully the publishers will get the message one day!

Spec me an in depth strategy game

For TBS try the King's Bounty series (first one is called King's Bounty: The Legend). For base building RTS I don't think you need to look beyond Starcraft 2 if you haven't already played it.

Why to boy Games via Steam

I work in Brum in the week and use my main rig, then back to Newcastle at weekends with my backup rig. Steam is really convenient when moving between multiple PCs. I don't have to worry about carrying disks around and a lot of the recent games support steam cloud which keeps my saves up to date...

    Which graphics card?

If you want to avoid SLI in the future then get the best card you can afford. The GTX570 will last you a long time at that resolution. It is also a good overclocker and can get up to GTX 580 performance in most cases. I don't think even a heavily overclocked GTX 560 can match that.

    Going SLI - PSU requirement?

Check out this article: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3810/nvidias-geforce-gtx-460-part-2-the-vendor-cards/1 There are power numbers for stock and overclocked. If everything is at stock you should be OK with your current PSU. (Note the CPU in these tests is running a 25% overclock so will draw...

    replacing thermal paste & warranty

EVGA will allow you to remove the stock cooler without voiding the warranty, as long as you put it back on if you have to RMA. I'm not aware of any other manufacturer who will let you do this. Worth bearing in mind next time you purchase a card.

    Warhammer 40k Space Marine

Looking good so far. Really hope this one delivers. With the bolter, cleanse the unclean. We will cleanse! With the flamer, purify the unholy. We will purify! With the chainsword, purge the corrupt. We will purge! With the missile, kill the impure. We will kill! :D

GTX 460 or the old 4890

Don't confuse video ram with system ram. You have 3Gb of system ram. The gtx 460 has 1Gb of dedicated vram; the gtx 470 has 1.25 Gb. If you want to avoid your system ram being eaten you are better off with the 470.

    Which card: GTX460 1gb/768mb (£130/100), 4890 1gb (£75), 5770 1gb (£85), gtx260 (£75)

Agreed. 4890 is the best deal. If you want DX11 then 768mb 460 as the VRAM will not be an issue at that res.

    460 1gb and 768mb

OP is talking about 460 sli. Hence the earlier discussion on the 480, but I reckon you can get away with an OC 470 at that res right now for most games.
  18. hallmeister

    460 1gb and 768mb

At that res I would go for a single 470 as it has a fair bit more grunt than the 460 especially with a decent overclock. Then you can always SLI it later on if you need to.

someone who Knows about cards please?

Why not buy yourself the 460 and give him your current 4870 which he wants anyway. That way you both get an upgrade. You could even try the 4870 in his PC first to make sure his PSU is up to it.
