With the VPN connected, I would assume that it is now your default Gateway (or only route) and all traffic from the connected device is being forced down that. It also means that if you override the dns settings they will not work as they are also being forced down the VPN. Would suggest...

There should be an option to reset it from the OS, if there isn't a Win10 client you could boot from debian live CD and use that. I think the application is hponcfg (hp tool) You might be able to reset it from the menu when you start the server?

IMHO assuming it is not going to block something obvious (neighbours window, access etc). I would just stick it up, plead ignorance if you get challenged and take it down. By the look of it, it may not last more than a few months once erected!
