I think you have to jump through to many hoops with hardware compatability to run a test Win Server 2012 VM to test all the possible combinations.
You are going to learn more by building a real world box and learning to set up that, break it, move cables and connections ... than trying to coax...

The G8 is also louder... runs warmer...... is a bi*** to get any decent amount of drives into... without some extra money paid out on 2.5" mounting plates for SSD's or stripped down velociraptors.
Stick a decent RAID card in and it will cook !

the reasoning is that I have a torrent service running on my setup... within the pool... I may have to take a drive out and run the service on that to stop duplication and hence activity in the pool.... I'll keep an eye...

start > control panel > hardware and sound > power options > click "Change plan settings" next to your preferred plan > click change advanced power settings > this opens the advanced settings window > expand "Hard disk" tree > expand "Turn off hard disk after" > you can then adjust the time as...
do you not have a option to spin down the drives from within the tRAID console ?

look at the Hypervisors first... decide which one your going to use.... the limitations of each when the trial period ends.
The costs if you pay for a subscription... then build your host machine to suit.
RAM is the other consideration... the more the better... cores have already been...
