It's electrically motorised, right? Otherwise I'm trusting that if I were to slide it shut very quickly, the camera will still have space to flip after the closure without physical damage.
I just have Device Only mode on at all times. Apparently, in Pie, it's only actually on when an app makes use of it then it deactivates. You'll see the location icon in the status bar when it's in use.
