Images of items I have purchased (except trainers)

Could probably have finished it neater, but structurally it's fine, the guard would have caved in well before that weld gives way. Being a sump guard, best to not get precious over how it looks anyway, it will pick up plenty of battle scars...

    Building a garage

Another vote for skipping the architect, work out what you want and get a architectural technician or structural engineer to work out the details. Just a suggestion, if you're thinking of doing any car work in this garage, have a look into scissor bed lifts, I put in a couple in mine, they're...

    Loft conversion

Pretty easy to get an idea of room dimensions, you'll lose about 200mm in the floor for the new structure, and about 150mm depth in the roof for the insulation, measure up the room and take off those amounts, any area below head height should be considered storage area. There's no actual minimum...

Self-drive Uber identifies woman as false positive (which inc. plastic bags)

Normally I'm all for self driving tech, accidents and fatalities are inevitable, however this one shouldn't have happened. The pedestrian was obviously at fault, you're responsible for your own safety, and she should have been looking for and reacting to oncoming danger, however I think uber and...

Buying a house with loft conversion, but no building reg certificate...

Don't know anything on the legal side, but I bought a place back in 2010 with a non-approved loft conversion (it was a bargain :)), and spent a good while stripping it out and redoing it myself to get building control approval, so I know a fair bit on the construction side. The reality is that...

    Gas Explosion in UK

Apparently the explosion originated from the shop basement, the pressure from the explosion could only go up from there, which is why it destroyed the building so thoroughly but barely touched the neighboring ones. It would also explain why no one noticed the gas build up (assuming it was a gas...

'Space graffiti': astronomers angry over launch of fake star into sky

Reiterating my previous point, it's only visible around sunset and sunrise, all other times it's in Earth's shadow and not visible. No one does astronomy at these times for fairly obvious reasons. I'm a little skeptical of their claim it's the brightest object in the night sky, I suspect they...

'Space graffiti': astronomers angry over launch of fake star into sky

The odds of this actually causing any issues for astronomers is minuscule for a couple of reasons: It's in visible range for less than 2% of the planet at any one time It's in a low orbit (250km) so it's only lit up around 30 minutes after sunset and before sunrise (latitude dependent), not a...

Singapore and Hong Kong photo critique please!

Great shots, love the long exposure night shots with the streaking headlights. Were you using a tripod or just propping on handrails etc? Shot 10 looked pretty familiar, till I remembered I'd taken that exact shot myself last year :p

Images of items I have purchased.

I'll have spent around half that when I'm done, the only really expensive bit of the conversion is that the trapezoidal screws have to be replaced with ball screws, everything else is relatively cheap (stepper motors, drivers, power supply and switches together cost about £300-400).

I just bought this... A Sieg SX3 vertical mill, which is already in over a hundred pieces for cleaning and adjustment... It's a metalworking machine for those that don't know, I'll be converting it to CNC (computer control) to make all manner of awesome things :D

Give me an item to make in 3DS Max

Cars are a good one, there's loads of reference photos available to get you started, pick a car you like, get some decent side views that you can use to get the basic shape down and work from there.

Wierdest things you've seen at work...

A couple of years ago a shipping container from the continent came on the back of a truck, cracked the doors open and a dozen immigrants sprung out. Unlucky for them they were in a fenced compound in the arse end of the midlands, there was a brief benny hill sketch as they were rounded up...
