Just an update..
It took them this long to accept the RMA, but they are giving me a shipping label. Some measure of faith in Corsair has been restored.
I have already been through the rma process with Corsair a few years ago and I wasn't impressed because I had to front the sizeable postage cost to send my PSU to them in the Netherlands.
Now I have a second Corsair PSU (bought from OCUK) go bad on me with 3 weeks left on its 5 year warranty...
Had to RMA a PSU recently to their place in Holland, cheapest couriers I could find were these guys: http://www.parcelsplease.co.uk/
Corsair did not refund the postage. I think they should.
Overall I would rate their RMA service as 'OK', nothing spectacular
Yes, because that is when all the reviews were made - when it was released. Besides, drivers don't work miracles; the 4870 is just a faster card.

That 5770 costs ~£50 more than a 4870, yet is slower. To buy it would be illogical to say the least.

Don't rule out the 4870, which is faster than the 5770 and cheaper. You can pick one up for ~£100 if you shop around or get a second hand XFX one with the carry-over lifetime warranty for ~£70
