    A little advice needed.

@numatic.nathan oh yes, many a tweak and a bios update and much hair pulling ensued but the 555 stayed resolutely dual core. @KD keep this up and I'm going to be swiftly bankrupt! :D that's certainly more attainable, and tempting! I am leaning towards the 2500k/Z68 now (Z68 seems a bit more...

    A little advice needed.

Thanks KD, this is the 'having your cake and eating' solution - which I am very tempted by, but the delayed rebate from selling the the old parts makes it a bit tricky in the short term for me financially. What are the advantages of the Z68 platform over P67? I'm a bit behind with the tech as...

    A little advice needed.

Hi folks, I'm on the verge of scratching an upgrade itch I've had for a while and I've hit a bit of a brick wall over the final details. So I'd appreciate some suggestions. Ok so I'm currently running this: Phenom II x2 555 @ 3.8GHz Sapphire HD5770 1024 +2 x 2GB DDR3/SSD/Xonar etc...

A rambling collection of upgrade questions...

Interesting, I hadn't really considered whacking some more RAM in: I figured 4Gb was dandy. I shall investigate. Thanks for the advice!

Alas yes, no joy. Won't unlock even to a tri-core: sad times.

A rambling collection of upgrade questions...

Hey folks, I built the system (below) this time last year based on your sterling advice and a lot of lurking around the internets. Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1024MB 4Gb DDR3 1600Mhz Asus M4A79XTD Evo socket AM3 Phenom II 555 BE (conservative OC of 3.6 Ghz) w/ a fenrir for cooling WD Caviar...

Sound cards with front panel i/o

Fantastic, thanks! You're right in that I thought a single solution would be ok for both gaming audio and my amateurish guitar-based machinations, but having had a look at some of your suggestions (Pod x3 looks awesome! Not sure I can stretch to one though) I think I shall have a look at...

Sound cards with front panel i/o

Hi folks, I'm looking to upgrade the sound in my computer (currently using onboard/RealTek) and I'm haveing a bit of trouble finding a product that fits what I need, so I thought I would pick your collective brains. Basically I'm looking for a decent (not necessarily spectacular) PCIe sound...

Tomshardware 'best gaming CPUs for the money' charts.

Alas it's having none of it, haven't quite exhausted all options but it looks like it's a genuinely duff quad: sad times. On a brighter note the new build is superfast compared to the E7350/9400M laptop I've been stuck using for games this past year (slightly less portable though!)

Phenom X4 or Phenom II X2, which one to get?

What kind of cooler are you using Drunkenmaster? I just ordered one of the 555s for my first from-scratch build, just waiting for the go ahead to pick it up from the shop (quite excited!) @the OP I also thing the 545 is the better choice here too (for what little it's worth :) )

Tomshardware 'best gaming CPUs for the money' charts.

I have been doing a bit of research into this over the past couple of weeks for a budget gaming build, and I'm pretty much convinced that cpu choice in gaming is almost a completely moot decision. Performance levels (only in games ofc!) just don't vary that significantly between cpus (especially...

Whats with the shortage of 5850's ?

At the £250 price point you could argue that 2 5770 in crossfire is the best 'bang for buck' as long as you don't need a mobo upgrade. It certainly beats the 5850 for performance from what i've seen, and trades blows with the 5870 in a lot of benches. Plus it has the added bonus of buy one now...

Unibody White vs Unibody Macbook Pro

I'm currently using the 13" alu unibody but have previously had the white polycarb model (it got knicked, this made me sad) the white model was a little chunkier and the screen wasn't quite as good. As Kanifee says the oversized multi-touch pad makes the wold of difference in day to day use...

    x3 720be unlock's to either 0/1/2 or 0/1/3 but not 0/1/2/3 ?

I know: it doesn't make sense. Clearly you have 4 healthy cores. I'm all out of ideas :S

    i5-Based £650 Spec

i5 is definitely where the sweet spot is for gaming imo. In terms of cases, the vanilla CM 690 is very well regarded and pretty similar to the 690 II (although I do love that external SATA bay, not sure I'd use it that often but still: awesome), seems like a pretty major markup in price for...

    i5-Based £650 Spec

It kinda depends on what you're doing with it. If you're gaming then the i5 makes a lot of sense, but for some highly threaded applications the the i7 is very powerful. This Is a direct comparison of the two from anadtech. If you have a look you'll see they match each other very closely except...

    AMD Phenom X4 9850

I thought AM2+ mobo's could support AM3 CPUs? A bios update might add compatibility for athlon II/phenom II chips

    x3 720be unlock's to either 0/1/2 or 0/1/3 but not 0/1/2/3 ?

Are you running it as a quad at stock frequency/clocks? If you are you may need to bump up the vcore a wee bit to compensate for the extra core. Alternatively if you've still got it overclocked at the tri-core levels in your signature you may need to reduce the clocks back a bit to get it stable.
