Just found these images of the new Ferrari tyre 'blankets...'

Don't look like blankets to me - resistive heating elements in a box maybe...but not blankets...

Simon/~Flibster

Sounds and looks like an oven to me. Breaking the spirit of the law if not the letter?

I'm not much of a physicist, but from when I worked in a pizza shop the heated bags were fairly warm on the outside, surely a box would be a lot better at keeping the heat in and/or redirecting towards the tyre.

With no tyre changes for pit-stops there isn't any need to get tyres between the heated storage and the car quickly anymore which these box thingys would slow down surely, maybe thats why we haven't seen them before?

Aaaah - but what you could do is put them in that for most of the time - 120 seconds before the car comes in put them in the blankets - 30 seconds before the car comes in - remove the blankets. Not much more work.

Also McLaren tried them last year and were told they were not in keeping with the spirit of the rules...

Well McLaren - you can legally use them now. :D

Just been sent this - the teams were found guilty on a charge ther were not presented with.

The Formula 1 teams have pointed out a curious anomaly in the FIA World Council judgment of yesterday. The teams went to Paris accused of "acts prejudicial to the interests of a competition" and specifically a charge of having "wrongfully refused to allow your cars to race, subject to a speed restriction in one corner which was safe for such tyres as you had available" but were found guilty of a different charge which was "wrongfully refusing to allow their cars to start the race, having regard to their right to use the pit lane on each lap".

It is not clear why this would be the case but there is no doubt from the FIA documentation that it is indeed what happened. In legal terms, the two are clearly not the same thing.

Holy hell...

This dropped onto page 5 in under 24 hours!

Anyway - now doing the Friday Free practice stats. :D

Mainly Conrad spamming I think

There's a GP on this weekend? I thought they were all busy arguing. Good thing Magny-Cours is relatively close to Paris, or they'd never make it to the circuit on time!

There had been talk of boycotts after 14 cars refused to race in the US Grand Prix because of concerns over tyre safety.

But, after world governing body the FIA helped diffuse the situation by adjourning punishment on the teams until September

Delaying the punishment didn't help, it just leaves it hanging over the teams for the rest of the European season.

Oh just found out that Raikkonen has had a probable engine failure and as such will be starting from 10 places down on his qualifying position.

...and probably full of fuel....
