5850 a decent upgrade from a GTX260?

Yeah that's sort of what I was getting at. The 5850 is a much faster card for sure, but the GTX 260 handles most things very well. So for example going from 100 to 130FPS is not going to be very noticeable IMO.

What we need are some games that use new engines :)

I am actually considering picking up a 260 and using it til the refreshes come out or there are more next-gen choices.

Also you could always throw another 260 in there and go SLI.....

Unless you're gaming in 3D... it's not gonna be noticeable at all...

Well I had an overclocked gtx260 running at 772/1575/1150 with a waterblock on and the stock 5850 beats it.

Now that I have my 5850 overclocked to 1080/1300 with a waterblock it eats the gtx260 for breakfast :D

I can run all my games at 1920 x 1200 with 8xaa and they all run faster than ,my gtx260 did at 2xaa

I know what the poster meant by 130fps vs 100fps is not that noticable but there are plenty of games which run at 60fps or less even on my gtx260.

NFS shift looks awesome with 8xAA and still runs quicker than my gtx260 with no AA.

Depends how you look at it... from an enthusiasts pov... and taking overall scores into account rather than the handful of games the 5850 is outright better...

A decently OC'd 260GTX can manage say 42fps and a mildly OC'd 5850 49fps... granted stock for stock that would prolly be more like 36fps v 45fps.

....come on....where do you pull these figures out of?!? a 260 is not in the same league as a 5850...

NV should employ you to be their spin doctor.

I'll probably stick with the 260 then. Last time i changed GFX i was dissapointed ( went from 8800GTX SLI to a single GTX280 ) so dont want to do that again.

What happened to your 280 GTX? I went from 8800 GTX SLI to a single 285 GTX and I have been pleased with the upgrade, albeit a sideways one.

I think I would buy a 2nd 260 GTX If I were you.

22% difference over all resolutions... baring in mind that most 260GTX will overclock 20-25%... even poor ones will do 15-20% OC... I think that puts it in the same ballpark unless you can get a good OC on the 5850.

Its more like 50% though in resolutions that matter from looking at those results. That site for me is one of the worst to get a comparison on cards.

Rroff, the 260 battles with the 4870/4890 not a 5850, and you're trying to hypothetically compare a "decently overclocked" 260 against a "mildly" overclocked 5850. I can fiddle too, what if you compare a poor overclocked 260 against a super overclockable 5850?! Bring us evidence also to back your claims up or as usual you won't have any.

You are clearly bias towards NV. The 260 is a good card (I have one) but it is not in the same league as a 5850, not just on the basis of performance.

Without touching the voltages tho... looking around the review sites most aren't getting more than 10-15% increases.

If you start playing with the voltages and cooling its a whole different ball game... I know people running almost 1800MHz shader clocks on the 260GTX with uprated cooling and voltge boost (from 1242 stock).

I'm not trying to put the 260GTX up against the 5850...

I'm saying that performance wise its still in the same ballpark overall if you put a decently OC'd 260GTX against a mildly OC'd 5850... and in that regard spending anything much extra isn't really worth it...

Now if you know your playing at a resolution and settings in games where the 5850 has a significant performance advantage then sure go ahead - tho I still say you'd be better off putting up the money for a 5870.

what? 15% is only 833MHz. THey all do more than that easily on stock voltage.....come on.

I'm only going on the reports from a bunch of review sites - including those linked to earlier... obviously they aren't going for extreme overclocking in these reviews... but thats what I based my mild OC result on.
