Not much of a performance increase over the 6800 GT but still looks like a good card

WoW didn't expect it to be that bad, supposed to be inbetween the 6800 GS, and 7800 GT, which are both above the 6800 GT, and 6800 Ultra, but looking at that, theres not much in it between it and the 6800 GT!!, and they even say it keeps up with the GT, and sometimes the Ultra in most tests, pretty poor that, its supposed to be better than those cards, not keeping up with them.

Why didn't the include the ultra in the benchmarks is what i want to know ;)

I reckon the ultra will be pretty much on par with the GS, so not really much in it. Although it's basically impossible to get hold of the GT's/Ultras now, so i guess it's just another option now.

Defininately not worth an upgrade from a X850 level card....5-10% quicker,if that, and its not even powerful enough to make much use of its only real advantage, SM3...this card will die as certain a death on Unreal 3 engine games as much as my X850.. :)

    Very Disappointing.

It is faster than the agp 6800gs but not by enough imo, like guru 3d said at the end of tyhe artical agp could have gone out with a bang instead of this mediocre card

Ofcoarse a 6800Ultra will beat it esp overclocked, I feel they should make = apg/pci-e cards till Vista and elt agp die then, cause they are just booting the peeps like me who paid £££ for new 6800 Ultra agps in late 2004 (impossible to get b4 as of bad paperlaunch), i got a amd mobile running 250/500 FSb and 2.8gig and 2 gig pc3500 running 500mhz, why do i need build a new pci-e rig now and then i will want again a new rig when I get vista.

I agree they could have made a "bang" agp card, maybe Asus or XFX will bring out a even faster model (I know XFX one now but faster and non cripled) or possibly rivatuner and or bios mod can fix ;)

    Hi there

7800 GS is quicker than a 6800 Ultra!!

6800 Ultra is 400Mhz core and 1100Mhz memory.

7800 GS is 375MHz core and 1200Mhz memory, which would make it an equal to 6800 Ultra.

However BFG/XFX are overclocked 400/1250 and 440/1300 which would make these quicker than a 6800 Ultra and when you consider the price of £200 +VAT they are good buys as 6800 Ultra's were like £300 +VAT........

Plus the 7800 GS is a good overclocker with most hitting 475MHz or more on the core and approx 1400MHz memory speed so they are a good card for the money. :)

it didnt need to be mindblowingly fast, nvidia know they are going to sell a fair number of these anyway.
plus when it is overclocked it pulls away in benchmarks

hmm, dunno what to think about this. the xfx card seems like a good deal but the bfg ones for 240 is more in my price range. but for the money this does not seem like a viable upgrade for me. guess i will just get an xbox 360 now.

Performance exactly where I expected it to be, I don't know why some of you are dispaointed. Its the fastest AGP card in existence and support SM3.0, dynamic branching, HDR. And has faster shaders compared to the 6800Ultra.

It was only ever supposed to be a replacement for the EOLed 6800Ultra.
And it has excelent price-performance ratio and has no competiors. where is ATI's SM3.0 + HDR capable high end AGP card?

Actually at paper launch 6800 Ultra speeds were 400/1000, but as far as I know once ati annouced their new card nvidia made them all 400/1100 and most good manu's made them 425/1100 (Im talking 3D not 2D clocks same as mines), fact is this new 7800GS aint much a upgrade for us on 6800Ultras esp if we got above ultra extreme clocks >= 450/1200 (im currently 465/1250, no volt mods yet.

I'd buy one if it was possibly to unlock to at least 20pipes, nevermind the other aspects guru3d site says cant be unlocked (this could change with new builds of rivatuner i hope)

I find it funny they decline to show us benches against a 425/1100 6800ultra, there is probably little gain for fact you got to sell old card and buy new one and its probably last agp card most will ever use.

Added to fact how fast 6800 ultra was at launch (even if paper and hard to get hold of) april 2004, this is nearly 2 years onward, we need a new agp card with a bigger bang to even think about swapping out 6800Ultra's, suppose its good for peeps on likes of older cards like i read here and other forums.

if my 6800nu had 256mb of ram i would not even look twice at this 7800 card. but since im down on 128mb of ram and it is a must in todays games, thats why im a bit double minded about it. i know for a fact though 240 quid is not going to be justifying a big enough speed increase for me over my existing card.

Sorry thats the biggest load of tripe ive read all day gibbo.

6800 Ultra was a 16 pipe 16rop card, this is a 16 pipe 8 rop card and its clocked slower so its vastly less capable than the 6800Ultra in terms of pixel output, the efficiency increase of the pixel shaders in the G70 core vs the old NV40 is not enough to overcome that in several situations....the Anandtech benchmarks show the 7800GS getting its ass handed to it by an XTPE rather a lot, so this card is far from a 6800ultra beater at stock, in many situations its actually good deal slower. As for overclocking, well you could overclock an ultra too, albeit not as much.

As for price, yes the ultra was more expensive but that was a long time ago (18 months since release), it wouldnt command that sort of price today and it wouldnt cost them near as much to produce today as it did then either so its hardly a like for like comparison.

You can buy a 7800GT pcie card today for less than a 7800GS AGP. Thats to be expected for the lower volume, and the ~$10 cost to use an HSI pcie-agp bridge, so no arguments there. But the performance is VASTLY inferior at that price premium, so that is far far far from what i call a good card for the money.

    Poor show nvidia.

I myte as well jump in now by saying im very surprised with the benchmarks, not in a good way :p hehe! Pretty much the same as the 6800gs id actually suspect the card is the 6800gs with more pipelines enabled or something then a lovely 7800 title put on for fun to make us think its amazing!

Im now so glad I didnt hang about on an AGP miracle now! I cant see the point as you can get a 7800gt and a mobo for around £260 and if the mobo supports your current CPU then w00t!

    AGP is now officially DEAD!

yep guess i will not bother with this card. gonna stick to my 6800nu forever now unless i can get this 7800 for around 150 quid.

I agree with the above. The mind boggles if people with 6800gt/X800XL cards or above bother to get this. Unless this card can unlock and seriously overclock it's not even a straight choice for a 6800 or X800pro owner.

I still might get this for my AGP system, but not for at least 6-12 months when hopefully they might be a reasonable price.

Lol how is agp dead with new apg cards out, would you say this if you bought a £400+ agp 6800Ultra 18month ago, I doubt it, I bet my rig is better than most new pci-e rigs and cost more so I am on it till Vista.

This is the last card for AGP, it is dead.

I just built a PCI-e system for £600 that gaming wise no AGP setup can quite match, the fact yours cost more isnt a good thing. It is how much you get for your money, not how much money you spend :p

Yes but 6800 ultra is going on two years old and would surely be down to £180-£200 with vat so the 7800gs's aint cheap, and like i said its about two years on surly they could have done something better
