Additional socket for internet?

I've just moved house, the master BT socket is downstairs but i'd like an additional socket upstairs to go into the study where my PC would be?

How much would this cost or could I do it myself?

Do you want to extend the phone line to the study so you can locate the router there, or do you want to have the router next to the socket and install Ethernet from there to the study?

Either or really, whichever one is easier/cheaper.

There wouldn't be enough difference in the cost or difficulty for it to matter.

It is generally best to keep the router as close to the master socket as possible, but a properly wired phone extension doesn't make much difference to the achievable connection speed.

The most complicated part of the job is finding a suitable route for the cable.

So basically keep the router downstairs and then have the cable from it going up into the room above?

Okay.

Option 1

Install a network faceplate where you want the two ends of the cable to be.

Connect the two faceplates together with a suitable length of solid-core UTP Cat5e or Cat6. For this, I'd use Cat5e. Whichever you choose buy faceplates that are of the same category (i.e. don't buy Cat5e faceplates and then use Cat6 cable).

Use premade patch cords to connect from the sockets to the equipment.

Option 2

Install a length of solid-core or stranded cable and crimp your own plugs onto the ends.

Option 3

Buy a suitably long premade network cable and route it from A to B.

Option 1 is the elegant way of doing it, but all will work just fine.
