Yeah AMD playing games, Vega 56 is a more powerful product and now pretty much same price. I'd go as far as saying the RX 590 is probably as fast or very close and is cheaper.

It depends on the actual game whether crossfire is good or bad. You just need to check the Crossfire Game Compatibility List to find out if your favourite games are supported and how well they perform. Some games work excellent under crossfire, other games perform worse.

Multi GPU is very hit and miss - a lot of advanced DX11 effects and DX12 pretty much break traditional SLI/CF compatibility and not many developers program specifically for DX12/Vulkan explicit multi-adaptor at this point.
