As for speed.net being garbage I use it and have found it to be quite accurate.
Thinkbroadband gives me a bit less speed.
In part, it'll depend on the links between your ISP and the sites, but in general (i.e. not "I've tried it and it was good"), speedtest.net is quite often way off the mark. I said "ThinkBroadband's is apparently more accurate" based on this.
Speedtesters should be used as an indication of speed, ie if it's down by half it needs investigating further.
Well yeah, but I wasn't seeing people posting a speedtest.net result along with an IP profile and sync rate - just "OMG, low!!!!!!1111eleventyone".
