The first Mondeo I bought, a Ghia X, had been stood for 6 months.

I think it did more harm than good as I had to spend around £100 and a weekend of my time replacing some consumables that had failed because it was stood.

The Rover is the best car by miles, but the Escort is very cheap on parts and its easy to find a Ford dealer so perhaps the Escort is the best rundabout.

Again with no MOT these cars are only scrap value. Look on ebay what you can get for a few hundred quid near you - easily will be better than this lot of unknowns.

Wouldnt touch any of them with a bargepole. Might as well take your chance at an auction - you'd still be taking pot luck but at least you'd be paying auction prices, whereas at £500 you're paying 'proper' money.

This is very true. With that mileage, age and no MOT those three cars are worth 100-200 tops.

The 106 is the worst by a long shot, forgetting the plastic bumpers they are nasty, nasty cars.

Look at the autotrader website and see what you can get for circa £500.

Another friend has offered me the following for £300

1992 Peugeot 106 1.0L XN, 4 speed. It's got 1 month tax and 11 months MOT and 50,000 miles on the clock. 4 good tyres, good brakes, recent service and exhaust

Would that be a better buy?

No, its a 1 litre 106 XN. Seriously, don't.

My personal preference would be the Escort. Easier and more comfortable to drive :)

Hi

Just wondering why you thought that - I've been in an Escort, an old shape 400 (the saloon version of the Mk2 200) and the new shape 400 (based on the Honda Civic) and both of the Rovers are much nicer inside and far more comfortable to be in

Granted I haven't driven either

Well I've driven them both and it all, pretty much, revolves around the controls. The 400 had much lighter steering but felt overall "rougher" to the driver, whereas the Escort(s) had a clutch that you could virtually sidestep and still have a smooth gearchange. With the Escort a very smooth and comfortable drive was very uninvolving, typically for Ford of that era, whereas the Rover required a bit of effort.

Have to say I find my Escort extremely easy to drive,

What is this 'easy to drive' thing people keep mentioning?

I have yet to drive a car thats not 'easy to drive' and thats stuff which ranges in size from a Fiesta to a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Ah come on do I really have to go into detail, you know what I mean, its easier to drive than the Peugeot, easier than my mate's KA and I've found it easier to drive than my mate's new Corsa, another one of my mates has an Astra and it's easier to drive than that (not Phate's Astra, an older one)
