Best Cat.6 cable to use for Home Network and CCTV

Hi All,

New this this forum, so please forgive me for any errors.

Looking for a good quality Cat.6 tried and tested cable 305m reel.

This cable will be used to network the whole house as well as CCTV 8 to 10 ip camera system.

Looking to run 4 pairs to each bedroom (4 bed house) and 4 pairs to each room down stairs (3 rooms)

Would also like opion on where to install the Network Data rack.

Options are garage or utility room which is central to the house.

Appreciate your time and help.

As there are so many different types of cable out there, I was wondering which is a good brand and specification to go for?

The utility room would be central, however would the noise of the fans effect the living room area? Question would be how loud would the fans be?

That's what I spec for almost everything. It's overkill for internal work, but if you're running cameras or access points externally it's the right stuff for the job.

Utility room sounds good for the Patch Panel.

I personally like the CCS Connectix tool-free keystones and matching patch panel, but they do get pricey when you're installing this many points.

The huge advantage of the keystones is you can easily add another connection without having to take the cover off the patch panel.

And the CCS Connectix vertical entry RJ45's are always great to work with.

For mounting the patch panel, think very hard about what you want in there as theer are LOTS of open frame and data cabinet options. The key factors are the depth of anything you want to install (most servers are 800mm+ deep) and the number of things you want to install. I tend to go for a 6U open frame with a top and bottom plates as that means i can install a rack mounted router, rack mounted switch(es) and a rack mounted NVR, plus the patch panel(s) and still have a bit of room for something like a Cloud Key mount.

You're probably going to need 2 switches. A 48-port PoE switch is the obvious choice but the energy consumption on those is horrific and I would tend to spec a 48-port non-PoE and a 16-port PoE.

You’d usually be looking for Cat6 UTP solid core. If you need to run cables externally buy external grade cable as needed.

I'm looking to use Draytek switches which have two small fans inside and also a Hikvision NVR 16ch. Which also has fans inside

I really wouldn't get too hung up on brand names -that's probably all you're paying the extra for. I've had unbranded Cat5 network cable in my house for a long time and it's never given me any problems.

Why cat6? Cat5e is good for 10gb's under 45m it's cheaper and easier to work with especially if your crimping your own cables.

Cheap cable is fine for the home. I have my entire home cabled in Cat5e and it happily runs at 1Gbps. I am sure it would run faster, but I don't actually have anything faster. You don't need screened. You only need screened cable in industrial environments and often home products don't even support screening ( my router doesn't ). Copper cable is better for longer runs of cable, which again is not a problem in the home. I get copper if I am terminating the cables myself, but that's probably just me. Besides, the cost difference with copper is pretty small.

You're so wrong on this, cheap cable is terrible to work with.

Also, you want solid core and not stranded.

Go with either Excel or CCS cable.

It doesn't have to be cheap either. I helped out on a cabling job where we used 8 boxes of Cat5e from Black Box, which wouldn't have been cheap, and it was horrible to work with.

I buy Excel LSZH cable by default. It's nice to work with and the LSZH jacket is easier the strip than the PVC (although it does seem to be more easily damaged if a cable snags on something). It comes in nicer colours as well.

Cheap cable is rubbish, Excel or Connectix are both good, you can buy a box of Excel Cat6 solid core 100-071 (purple) cable for about £75 on the bay, if you want the white version its about £104 a box. Excel Cat5e is about £50-£55 a box, Connectix Cat5e you can pick up even cheaper right now at about £35-£37 a box.
