Goodfellas is brilliant, all the characters are spot on. Its nto the best storyline ever, but the ways its done is great. Id rather get shot at than watch the Godfather again.

The bit of full metal jacket before they go to war is amazing.

Surprised no one has said anything about The Usual Suspects to be honest, its class.

Have to agree with Gilly's list as being pretty much the entirity of the options that fits the thread title. They may not all be films that I enjoy, but I understand what makes a film become the greatest of all time - and all those films have that quality.

I would probably put forward Shawshank, as it is an exceptionally made film, great direction, narrative, acting and story - and has almost universal appeal.

However it only just about makes my top 20 favourite films (but I wouldn't class my faves as all time greatest films)

If that makes sense :p

I don't see how anyone can have one "best" film. For me it depends on my mood, who I'm with. I love:-

Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources
Bladerunner (Original release version)
The Green Mile
The Princess Bride
The Outlaw Josey Wales

too many to list really.

Most have been mentioned that I could think of but 12 Angry Men simply for the performances, it doesn't sound like it should be a great film because you have basically 12 jurors and more or less one room for the whole film but it is truly captivating.

The Matrix.

The style, the action and the special effects were all fantastic. But the main aspect which distinguishes this film from others is the storyline and the concept around which it is based upon.
