think yourself lucky you don't live somewhere with real insects, like south america/australia!
I created a monster! 
We've got plenty of "real" insects back home, how does a cockroach the size of your palm hiding under my pillow sound to you? I don't mind these at all, I just want to stop them coming in cause they can't get out afterwards, they end up dying and I have to vacuum them off the floor days later. Netted curtains are what I also thought of originally, but they sound like a hassle to install. A/C would indeed be the ideal solution, but if I could afford one I would've bought it weeks ago and not been posting here!
