Can I share a drive between 2 OS's?

Seeing as my current XP setup's drive is coughing up a nice death rattle, I've secured a new hard drive and a new copy of XP SP3 (legit of course).

All my work is backed up from my main C/D HD onto another HD called J under my current Windows installation. If I install XP on my new drive, can I get the new copy of XP on the new drive to see old backup J drive without any ownership/security issues arising, and will the old XP install still see it if I need to revert back to the old setup while it's still bootable to grab anything I've forgotten?

yep should all be good. would be best to remove the backup drive whilst installing the new os thou just to make sure you dont format the wrong drive :)
