Can porting number go wrong?

    I am thinking of either going over to Tesco or Asda Pay-As-You-Go and want to take my number with me.

    I am with Orange and i know i need a Pac Code.

    Now, i really can't afford to lose my existing number. Can the transfer go belly up and i could lose my existing number or is it fool proof?
