Can't access harddrive - suggestions for software to fix this?

I just plugged in my external 2.5" 320Gb drive and Windows 7 said something about needing to check it. I let it do that, also ticking the 'check for bad sectors' box for good measure. As the progress was extremely slow I cancelled after about 40 minutes and now the drive can't be read. It just shows up as "Local disk" in Computer, through Disk Management shows its full size but calling the type RAW as opposed to NTFS.

Now I can't check the disk again as Windows says it's not readable. Assuming it's not a hardware failure I figure I just need good software to sort this one out. Can anyone recommend something to this end - it doesn't have to be freeware, I'll get a commercial solution if it's that good.

Much appreciated!
