The reason so many people including me have various problems with USB modem or internet type products is solely because USB wasn't designed to occomodate for the internet.
I hate USB intenernet products because they're a nightmare, especially in linux.
Try to use the ethernet internet modem. It'll be worth it. Trying to configure it in USB will take ages.

    What exactly happens?
USB you would need drivers for, network should work OK (unless Windows doesn't include a driver for the network card).

excuse my ignorance regarding this :o When installing XP,i just usually plug my modem back into my network card & bingo,i'm back on line.

But tried installing Windows 64 & thought it would be a case of doing what i do after an XP install, plugged into card & nothing.Like i said,i tried using a usb lead from the modem, but get nothing.

back on XP for the moment, but would like to give 64 a try. how would i use my ethernet connection

    Thanks for the help folks

Well for one, do you have a network card showing in network connections or device manager?
"Nothing" doesn't mean a lot - what exactly happens, no lights show up, the card says it's not connected, what?

I've found in x64 occasionally there's issues with pci network cards (unless there's a 64-bit driver for them of course) Do you not have ethernet built into your motherboard? If so use that as your x64 mobo drivers will allow that to work without issue.
