Cheapest chip I would look for which is a great wee Overclocker is the E4500. Had mines running at just over 3GHz and never missed a beat :)

The Phenom II dual core is an excellent choice as mentioned above, to be honest with the unlocking and clocking potential coupled and the fact that it's relatively new tech you can't do much better when it comes to value. The 545 definitely gets my vote.

Core2 E6300/E6320/E6400/E6420

All been going in the MM for about £20-30, and they are absolute steals at that price.

All will easily do 3.2GHz+

Grab a cheap P35 or above board, few GB of PC6400 mem and away you go.

Managed to pick up a E6300 for cheap, 1066 DDR3 memory and a P35 board so hopefully should all run together ok. Came to £85 for the lot.

Once it is all up and running i will report back.

Is the E6300 still decent enough for some PC gaming? I have a HP HTPC lying about with an e6300, 5Gb ram (odd number i know, will probably just use the 2Gb sticks) and two 160Gb HDD's.

Thinking about picking up a cheap motherboard, PSU and GPU to make a small gaming PC. Would it be worth doing with the E6300?

Yes, it is still a very capable processor and people don't really need anything better for most games.

Look at this article showing the difference the extra cores make:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/cpu-scaling-in-games-with-quad-core-processors/3

The e6300 at 3.6ghz will perform close to the e8400 in that graph.

Cool! Didn't realise it was still good enough for gaming today.

I could fork out about £150 odd maybe on a motherboard, GPU and PSU perhaps. Second-hand I would assume with my budget, but I don't need anything high-end. My monitor only supports 1280x1024 or 1280x720 if I use my TV.

The Radeon 5770 looks nice, coupled with a cheap P45 and a Corsair 400w, would that be decent enough for gaming at those resolutions with the E6300 (OC'd of course).

That's more than enough at that resolution!

I'm running the same setup (5770,e6300) and i'm very happy playing modern games (cod mw2 mostly) at 1920x1080 resolution.

I've got a very cheap g31 mobo (£30 new last year) and it's taken my e6300 to 3.6ghz very easily.

What would the E6300 be like at converting files to burn on to dvds? Im currently using a Q6600 @ 3.2ghz in my main rig and was wondering if i would notice much difference between the two?

if your using something like nero vision express your time to encode will be almost doubled so yes you will notice it.
