I'm trying to find a reliable sub-£400 laptop.

Had a look at the Dell outlet, and they have some dirt-cheap laptops on there. I've dealt with Dell from a business perspective, and never had any problems with them. But I hear horror stories about their consumer support...

Thoughts? Any recommendations for cheap laptops?

I do not want to go the eBay/second-hand market route...

I got a Dell with a good spec for £360, can't complain. It survived a 12,000 mile round trip with the provided case and hasn't even got a scratch on it :)

Battery life is decent at around 3 hours general use, music, internet etc.

Exact spec was a:

Turion TL-50 1.6ghz dual core
2x512mb ddr2 667mhz
120gb HD
x1150 graphics
dvd rw
15.4inch widescreen
