Depends on what you mean by 'breaking down'. If you mean, leaving you stranded by the side of the motorway, then apart from Alfa Romeos (which simply blow up), very few cars nowadays leave you stranded by the side of the motorway unless they've been mechanically neglected.

For pure reliable though, it will be the Honda, then the Toyota.

Breaking down = anything going wrong with it.

I don't think that in the real world a Corolla would be any better for reliability than a Focus - even the survey says there's a 4% difference which is well within the realms of error.

You are treading on some sensible ground, in the real world (UK) neither car should make much of a difference as we don't demand much at all from our cars, however saying Focus>reliable than Corolla in general is just LOL.

Wow, is everyone ratty today after getting up early for the Grand Prix or something?! Calm down...

An 05 plate C4 is perfectly good car if low running costs and reliability are the objectives, not significantly better or worse than a similar Focus.

An 05 plate C4 is perfectly good car if low running costs and reliability are the objectives, not significantly better or worse than a similar Focus.

Except for the 12,220 C4s built between 01/01/2004 and 31/12/2005 that were recalled due to them being at serious risk of catching fire.

Repeated ingress of saline water into the connections to the Electronic Control Unit for the Anti- Lock Braking system may eventually result in a short circuit that could cause a fire in the engine compartment.

The 6,772 built between 01/09/2005 and 22/11/2005 recalled due to braking issues

This concern relates to right hand drive vehicles only. There may cases of the brake linkage lever being defectively assembled, which may result in a loss of braking efficiency.

The 6,906 built between 01/06/2005 and 30/09/2005 whcih were recalled due to possible brake fluid leaks.

There is a possibility that a seepage of brake fluid may occur at the union between the rear flexi hose and the metal brake pipes. This would eventually lead to the illumination of the low fluid warning lamp, which if left would result in longer brake pedal travel and reduced effectiveness of the brakes.

More recalls involve 25,000 cars being recalled due to the possibility of the airbag not going off in a frontal impact. Over 75,000 recalled with ABS/ESP issues. See for yourself: http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/re...or the date range 01/1/1992 to 01/12/2009&tx=

I would check to ensure any car would have had the work done, if you do go for a C4.

Why not? Based on the way you drive, an Avensis does 99% of everything your car does. Cheaper to run and more reliable too! ;)

All you know about my driving style is that I cannot be bothered to drive at 100mph on Motorways in the day time and as a result benefit from lower fuel consumption.

Now do exactly the same search for Focus recalls and post the results.

I have. No recalls are as serious as water leaking into vital safety systems such as ABS, ESP and airbags and causing them to fail. The most major recall on the Focus was for an overheating/failing wiper motor. The effects 65,000 cars made in two years.

When you consider the Focus sells in much much higher numbers, a lower percentage of cars will be affected.

lets be honest, most of the cars in this price range and corner of the acr market will be mostly the same.
there will be some a little more reliable, but it really wont make that much difference. some will be more economical, but again it really wont make that much difference when the engines are compared.

what matters most here is:

- is it in budget
- does it feel ok when sat in
- does it look ok

Nothing else really makes any difference.

so, as i said earlier: Focus

Jeez whats with the bitchiness in this thread, get a life most of you FGS.

My opinions -

C4, Cheap to buy, decent engines, seem to have a reputation for reliability issues, but I know a few people that have the C4 picasso, which is essentially the same drive train and electronics, and none of these items have failed. Its nicer than a Focus inside and more entertaining to drive. That said, they do feel cheap in side.

Focus, I lived with an ST for 3 years, the lesser models are just as good to drive and its certainly well built, cheap to run, mine didnt break in 3 years of hard driving, so im guessing the lesser models would be better. It is dull to look at tho.

Toyota, the last corolla was actually all that bad, obviously reliable, not too bad to drive, and a great dealership network. They are very well built, but in my experience, they are not all that cheap.

Personally I'd go with a old shape Leon in top spec, youve got no chance of getting a Golf worth owning for 6k.

Post all the details then so that we can all see then and make up our own minds.

In what country?
The MK5 Golf is BLAND and the C4 isn't very nice and you would have to be a bit mad to buy one over a Golf, Focus or Corrola.

C4 isn't very nice? wow an excellent example of an objective review. I would also disagree that a mk5 golf is bland. Compared to a Ford/Vauxhall etc etc its positively thrilling :D

This thread has just become typical of most of the threads on here these days with people that have never experienced the other vehicles except for what they see on TG or Watchdog.

Apologies to the OP for the ruined thread.
