Anybody who has a blog is familiar with the standard comment spam topics: viagra, weight loss, drugs etc. But recently I've been getting comments on a couple of my WordPress sites that consist entirely of URLs formed of random characters: I'm struggling to see the benefit of these to the spammer. For a start, none of those websites exist. For another thing, the anchor text is the same random characters, so even if the site did exist, the comment wouldn't push any search traffic to it unless the user searched for random characters? It seems like the bot is just generating totally random URLs. Does anybody know what these are about?
I used to get loads of this as well from several IP addresses in Germany. I sent a polite email to their service provider, and I also banned them from accessing any part of my site. I got a confirmation reply from the service provider, and I've never had any more spam since.
Could be just a case of testing the vulnerability of your site before launching an attack and then doing a mass 'linkto' search on Google with said 'random' characters to see which site(s) are infected.
