I fixed someones laptop recently who had a malware infection.

Its all gone now and all tools show that there is no more virus or malware.

However, when downloading a file in internet explorer, it still says that the file contains a virus and will be deleted.
Downloading the same file in Chrome or Firefox works fine.

Microsoft Security Essentials was installed before and seems to have been corrupted by the infection. I assume this is whats bloocking in IE. I have done a manual uninstall of MSE but the issue remains

What else can I try?

You must use and abuse your system if you have to format once a month. The average Win7 system on an SSD will go for years without needing a format to restore performance.

Only takes a year before the registry becomes an abysmal mess.

Really wish Microsoft would do something to tackle the out of date registry system.

Oh come on that sounds like rubbish to me. Especially with all the pre-caching that windows does now to speed up boot times and the like, I can actually see a format giving no performance increase unless your install is a few years old or is full of more junk than the average user would have.

comments like this would really make me question how well someone understands how computers work, the registry is just a database of details a machine needs to reference, good luck designing a machine without a registry equivalent, unless you want to fragment all that information in an unhelpful way.

I've seen this 3 times in the last week and no matter what tools I use (Combofix, Hitman Pro, MBAM, MBAR, Gmer etc) including the resetting of IE it makes no difference.

I have reset all services to default and run SFC. No difference. On each machine I ended up doing a backup format so if someone finds the answer it will save me a lot of further hassle !
