corrupted jpg?

Evening, I've used photorec to recover 2 photos that I deleted from a memory stick but I'm having a bit of bother opening them.
They show up in explorer with the standard jpg icon but when opened with fax/picture vewer it says no preview available, paint shop pro says they are not a supported type and paint also rejects them.

Is there a free program/utility that can make these photos viewable again?

When they show up in Windows Explorer is it an actual preview of the image? Or are they just represented by your PC's JPEG icon?

Give Paint.Net/Gimp/IrfanView a go but if Paint/PSP can't open the files then it sounds like the actual file info is borked.
