I have played the demo to the end and have been left wanting more. It would be cooler if it was a bit more open ended but there seems to be some scope there for replay value.

Large number of side missions... gonna buy the full version I think...

IMO they have done a good thing in keeping the complexity down, the only things I don't much like is not being able to buy another ship and the ship design leaves a bit to be desired, seemingly borrowing a bit from Babylon 5 and the Vorlon ships.

The textures on the planets and on the space stations are a little low res too, still it is pretty enough to keep me entertained.

Seems like a pretty good game, only problem i'm having with it is the combat seems really boring.

Basically I just come to a stand still and just shoot at the enemies and they shoot at me and I get no damage at all after blowing up four ships.

The game is utter crap. I did two missions at the start and they both shared the following things:

Same voice acting
Same mission plot
Same cut scenes
Same amount of enemies

According to my mate it doesn't change much throughout the game.

Well i've done missions that include transporting cargo, escorting ships, assassinations, scanning satalites, clearing area's of pirates, defending space stations and a fair few other different types. So its fairly safe to say that all of the missions are not exactly the same.

Yeah - pretty harsh call there... the game never set out to be X3 or similar, it was always going to be a fairly simple afair and personally I think it does that pretty well.

IGN: 8/10
Gamespot: 8.1/10
PC gamer: 62%
Games Radar: 70%
Euro Gamer: 80%
Games Xtreme: 85%

Whilst not a massively revolutionary game, it is hardly deserving of "utter crap". Infact it scores just a little below the average of X3. Granted it is no Freelancer, but it is similar in many ways to Wing Commander with a little more depth. This game is cool because of the same reasons Elite was cool, it's simple and fun.

EDIT: The voice acting is pretty poop :)

Got this today, seems pretty decent so far. Borrows heavily from Elite and Freespace 2, which is no bad thing.

One major annoyance however is that the game crashes on startup if I have the resolution set to 1680x1050. This means I've had to choose 1280x960 instead which obviously looks suboptimal on a widescreen monitor.

Intresting to see a lot of love for Freelancer, I might have to check that out sometime.

The demo made the game seem interesting, but that is far from the truth. It is incredibly samey and boring, 300 systems there may be, but they are all the same. It is incredibly shallow and easy (get full turrets, fly around till everyone is dead) with no replayability at all. A huge disappointment when you get to the end. Freelancer is hugely better and more varied in my eyes.

Well having played it for around 10 hours or so now I would agree that it does get quite repetitive in the same way that Elite does.

One of the most annoying things is in dogfights when you just end up literally going round in circles against an opponent for a few minutes - constantly banking as much as you can but still not being able to get them in your sights - reminds me of a 20 years old game I had for the Amstrad CPC called Ace II. Because of this sometimes it takes me 5mins to kill a simple pirate, and yet I've wasted bosses in 5 seconds before simply because I've flown directly at them from a distance and then let them have it with my plasma cannon. Once you get in close (0.0-0.2u) it's a bit of a nightmare.

Currently another frustrating thing is that while I have plenty of cash (over 500k), my tech level isn't high enough for the upgrades I want and of course you can't buy a new ship like you can in many games. So while I'm moving around progressing the story, doing missions, collecting artifacts etc, by and large all the money I'm generating from trading is largely wasted.

Oh, speaking of trading, it's a bit tiresome everytime I get into a fight having to drop my cargo containers, win the fight, and then have to go and collect my cargo containers again afterwards. Just slows things down unnecesarily.

^In spite of the above issues, however, it's still quite an addictive game and I'll be playing some more tonight.

Right.

I'm on this well annoying 'maze' level that's a bit like Descent, you fly around inside some installation with defences etc shooting at me. I've got to a generator and destroyed it, but I don't really know where to go next.

Tips?

Completed it today. The ending is a bit disappointing, although the 'secret' mission against the Ascarong gang that is unlocked when you get all 100 artifacts is pretty cool. A proper epic battle which is arguably a better finale than the storyline ending.

Fairly long game too. Dunno exactly how long it took me but I'd estimate at least 25hrs which is better than many games these days.

Good points:
-Similar style and feel to Elite
-Nice rpg style development of ship and abilities
-Decent visuals
-Reasonable combat
-Lasts a long time

Bad points:
-Some of the controls are a little fiddly, e.g. activating items (keys changing depending on what you have)
-Gets a bit repetitive in the same way that Elite does
-Keys to some systems are only found by flying to certain other systems, yet often there are no clues to which ones, meaning it's timeconsuming trial-and-error exploration.
-Enemy AI and attack patterns gets too predictable - especially attacking pirate systems where the formula is the same every time, 3 waves of 5.
-Voice acting/scripting is a bit patchy.
