Just noticed I have one dead pixel. Well, not dead but stuck as red. Haven't been able to massage it back to life. Been over it with a fine toothcomb and can't find any others.

3rd party cheap as you like component cable (with Xbox input too). I don't think there is a Sony official one, and tbh the ps2 picture looks fantastic through this £8 cable so I guess there's no need to spend a fortune. The Xbox, on the other hand, demands it! :p

ninja gaiden looks well nice. as for the x2vga+ xbox games would be displayed @ 640x480 and would not look as sharp on the 24 incher but displayed fine on me 2001fp.

Using x2vga is no different compared to the offical component. It takes the same quality of image and just transfers it to a VGA/RGB cable is all. X2vga is fully compatible with all the Xbox resolutions 480p 720p 1080i. The light even changes to represent the mode its currently running too.

I dont think people should be expecting console games to rival PC games in this I mean upscaling to a proper 1920x1080 res. Does the monitor display what the res is when running external sources guys? The screenshots posted still show jaggies as normal so my guess without checking is that the monitor probably runs the res the input is using and if required expands it to the 16:10 of the monitor its not going to take a standard res and make it look like hi def.

Dell guarantees image size and centering for all preset modes listed in the following table.

Preset Display Modes
Display Mode Horizontal Frequency (kHz) Vertical Frequency (Hz) Pixel Clock (MHz) Sync Polarity (Horizontal/Vertical)
VGA, 720 x 400 31.5 70.1 28.3 -/+
VGA, 640 x 480 31.5 59.9 25.2 -/-
VESA, 640 x 480 37.5 75.0 31.5 -/-
VESA, 800 x 600 37.9 60.3 40.0 +/+
VESA, 800 x 600 46.9 75.0 49.5 +/+
VESA, 1024 x 768 48.4 60.0 65.0 -/-
VESA, 1024 x 768 60.0 75.0 78.8 +/+
VESA, 1152 x 864 67.5 75.0 108.0 +/+
VESA, 1280 x 1024 64.0 60.0 108.0 +/+
VESA, 1280 x 1024 80.0 75.0 135.0 +/+
VESA, 1600 x 1200 75.0 60.0 162.0 +/+
VESA, 1920 x 1200 74.0 60.0 154.0 +/-

Please can anyone confirm if the following common LCD Tv screen resolutions are available. 1280x720 1280x768 or 1366x768?
Has anyone tried resizing to these screen res with P DVD? and compare to the native?

Perhaps the list needs updated if these work?

Yaka, that's not entirely true.

So far I've had this screen output at 1280x720 AND 1280x768 (on the Xbox and in Doom3, Far Cry etc). It scales fine! :)

OK can we have a full list completed of all available res.
Im still eager to know if a lower screen res setting is better for typical movie playback. Enlarging a standard res like a dvd to 1920x1080 is a lot of scaling.

Less scaling to a fullscreen 1280x768 or 1280x720 might be better for video playback, Ive read reports that MPEG compression is very noticable when fullscreening to native.

So whats the verdict?

Yaka:
Maybe you didnt fine tune the VGA input settings on the monitor or either your unit is dodgy but possibly the dell has some problem with the X2vga.
Both offer the same signal just via a different connection.

well i cant see it being displayed in screen properties.

My verdict is its very good for gaming (pc,xbox,ps2)and apps.

bit iffy as a genral tv/movie screen as i know from other forums afew peeps have got this just to use a htpc screen. dvds dont look that good the superbit discs off 5th element and crounching tiger both look naff unless they are being upscaled on xbmc. but when HD content is fed to it it looks very good.

one thing that i have noticed ive got the dell 2001fp and when ever i played xbox or ps2 games on it it didnt matter much what angle i looked it . with this one i prefer to be looking at it face on as looking at it from an angle makes things look a little washed out.

Strange... Both 1280x720 and 1280x768 are in my display properties. Have you got the 2405FPW(Digital) display driver installed?

Thanks Yaka, the HM aeron gets the thumbs up due to it's ergonomic adjustability, comfort and coolness(in both sense of the words). It has an elastic breathable mesh material, and is sort of chair that you don't have to keep re-adjusting yourself on.
I got my one from a second hand office supplyer(new) 6 years ago, unless you are wadded, it's the only to buy them.

There are different models and sizes so make sure you do some research if your thinking of getting one. Also, go for the model that allows extra forwards tilt (designed for typing etc).

One thing I that would have liked is a head rest for it.

Regarding movie playback. Check over on the [H] board. There's links to some decent upscaling software for dvds that apparently dramatically improves the picture when run at 1080p (aka 1920x1200).

Thanks for the check on screen res.

Will check it at a later time on [H] but let us know here how the panel is in the other res I quoted with Power Dvd. Really this is a lot less scaling than native and might improve movie playback without having to run or tweak at additional apps.

Worth a try aint it?
Same goes for winamp fullscreen visuals try those lower screen res, for faster animations particular you dual screen owners then stretch the window over both monitors, always loved that myself...

Excuse my total ignorance, but what does "1080p" mean?

I am using Intervideo software with my DVDROM and so far, some dvd's look very good in regards to picture quality, pixelation etc, and others look quite poor...

You'll see various numbers being quoted followed by i or p

The number = the number of lines in the display so more lines = a potentially higher resolution picture.

i = interlaced p = progressive

Interlaced is the way that most CRT based devices display an image where on each pass down the screen alternate lines are updated thus spliting each updated frame into two interlaced updates.

Progressive displays the entire updated frame each time but this method is not suited to all display devices but works well on TFT and plasma displays / projectors etc which are naturally progressive devices.

There are exceptions to the rule of course, there are plasma panels that have been build as interlaced displays, and there are CRT based devices able to handle progressive signals.

Chips m8ty , apologies if this is a dimbo question however where is this ? as long as you arn't breaking any rules to say of course

Are there any free\shareware apps that perform the same function or is it the case that any decent apps are all going to have a cost factor ?
