Is this not covered by a recall or anything if it's such a common problem.

No, BMW denies the problem.

There have been case when they will pay for a replacement engine but the owner covers the labour charge if the car has a full BMW service history.

The process can take months as every case is looked at individually.

How odd, a few minutes ago it said
All BMW diesels from 2001-2005 are potentially affected, generally older manuals arent affected but all automatic models are affected.

The safest way is to remove the manifold and check for the mechanism.

Now it says:
