I've recently bought a silent HTPC with a passive heatsink on an E6300. I've got a spare E6600 in another computer and basically I want to know wether there's a big speed difference between the two?

If I did go for the e6600 would the heatsink with no fan cope with any extra heat given off by the e6600?

Thanks

Can't be any harm in trying surely? I would have thought you'd see a difference, but if the performance is good enough, do you really need it?

If the cooler can handle the E6300, then there will be no probs with the E6600 as they are both 65nm cpu's and will roughly kick out the same heat.

But as allways when passivly cooling, make sure there is some airflow in the case.

Im fairly sure the old C2D E6300 and E6600 came with the same stock coolers anyway.

The only real difference apart from the extra 600Mhz on the E6600 is the E6600 has an extra 2Mb of cache.

Comes down to voltage at the end of the day.

Both CPU's have the same Vid voltage range of 0.85 - 1.5 volts

more volts = more heat produced..

As stated by bifday2k.. as long as you have good airflow over the passive cooler you should, in theory, be able to run the faster E6600

I recently (last week) put a E6600 in a build for a "web surfing only" buddy of mine and that was running at stock at 36C with a bog standard fan cooled after market cooler :)
