It was an EXAMPLE to illustrate a point! It wasn't a direct comparison. It was merely a throwaway 'Look even a diesel saloon is faster'. Thats it. Nothing more.

I'm not really interested in discussing modified cars versus standard cars as I feel its utterly pointless, but are you suggesting you can buy a Stage 3 Escort Cosworth for £11k?

Easily

http://passionford.com/forum/cars-for-sale/228855-450-bhp-escort-cosworth-lux-sold.html

that went for 13k and is about stage 6, big brake upgrades, engine rebuild etc, totally not needed for stage 3.

But you are interested in discussing a car thats a decade newer and depreciates by around 25% a year vs a car thats 10+ years old and appreciates yearly ?

The Escy is a collectors item now, I would own one over a focus rs500 and im pretty sure it would handle better being 4wd. Might not look as good if your a poser though.

Out of interest Fox do you know what time an e36 m3 does the 'ring in ?

You have to be a Ford Fanboy to buy a Cosworth. The same kind of person that spends £15k on a MK1 Escort Mexico, an enthusiast. I doubt anyone buys one now for value for money or smiles per £££.

Fox, if anyone asked why an old BMW M3 is worth more than a 2 year old model or why an old 1950s Mercedes 300SL is worth more than an 2010 Kia Picanto you'd reel off all sorts of information and hurl neverending abuse for the next 10 years.

Not at all, and such assumption just makes you look silly.

I'm not stupid, I know exactly why the Cosworth is worth what it is. I just don't think it's really WORTH what it costs, thats all.

I have the same opinion about the BMW E30 M3 as well :)

I am as entitled to my opinion on the Escort as you are yours. I know exactly how the market works and I know exactly why the Escort Cosworth is worth what is. All I'm doing is saying that in my opinion, it isn't REALLY worth what people are prepared to pay, if you know what I mean.

Dont even get me started on the Lotus Carlton :D

whats obvious is that fords marketing clearly worked.

bested by faster more technologically advanced motors such as the skyline, the GTiR etc and yet the fast ford is still worth more and more sought after than both put together!

its all the rally and touring car stuff that did it imo. but say you were located in another country - australia or something, im not sure the escort would have the same demand!

It's not a direct comparison for goodness sake, it's merely a benchmark with which to state 'They were not even that fast'.

Which they were not - compared to its contempories a Subaru Impreza Turbo was faster, a Mitsubishi Evo was faster, a Rover 200 Turbo was faster and in a drag to 100mph the Escort in standard form couldnt even put more than a tenth of a second between it and a not particularly powerful 4 door executive saloon!

Which all has very little to do with the car in hand imo. As you said the value reflects more than the performance.

Comparisons are great, but they are just that. Means **** all if you happen to have a love affair with the car.

I'd rather have an RS500 anyday. Far greather value for money! :p £40k anyone?

really don't get the comments about cheaper, more mass produced cars are faster etc. For me its nothing to do with that, its all about having said car and it feeling special to sit in and drive. Who cares if an old Rover Turbo or Datsun GTIR is faster, you have an Escort Cosworth or Delta Integrale!

How so? The Impreza had far more rally success including two British world champions!

Cossie did it previously. It's a Ford. it's a Cosworth. It has the letters RS on it. It was on a limited run of production. It looked purposeful. It could be tuned, etc etc.

All that added up to legendary status I guess.

Indeed

the Escort Cosworth was never raced in the BTCC (unlike the Sierra) and wasnt particularly successful in rallying either. The impreza won 3 world championships (1995 for McRae, 2001 for Richard Burns and 2003 for Peter Solberg)

the Escort Cosworth never won a world rallying title.

The last Ford to win a World Rally Championship was a MK II Escort RS1800 in 1981

I have fond memories of the escort cosworth. It was my first experience of a fast car, I was 4/5 and my dad had recently left working for ford as a salesman but still got on well with the salesmen at local dealers. I was with him when he went to a dealership in chingford where he pretty much went bonkers in the large gravel carpark behind the dealer, I think I was smiling for a week after that. My dad also had an rs500 for a few months but I was too young to remember.
