It's not really a limited run though is it? Thats quite a lot of cars. The Focus RS was a limited run - still a lot of cars made but they stated on Day 1 exactly how many they would produce, and then produced that many.

I see your point, I consider limited as either your expressed opinion or possible one driven by market forces. Ie my car was limited, probably down to the sales figures. But now in restrospect I own a limited production run of car?

There are for example only 4900 E39 530i Sport's. Yet I'm never, ever going to be silly enough to say thats a limited run. They didnt only decide to make 4900, they just.. only secured orders for that many so only made 4900!

Have you got the figures for a Escort RS Cosworth Deluxe then if were are to include trims? As there are a lot more E39s than the spec someone decided on. The manufacturer didn't even select your production numbers either, they were set from whether Bob in Croydon wanted a SE or Sport of Hans in Germany wanted a 520 or 530i engine.

Maybe Im looking at it from a different level but tooling up for only 8000 cars is a pretty serious undertaking in anyones book. I dont think market value is really my main focus of discuss and Im happy for the market to find its own price on stuff. If you have a Escort Cossie or a DC2 you dont sell it for what you think its worth you sell it at the price you think it will sell for, that will happen for ever from the day anything is bought new and secondhand market exists.

I just want to focus on some of these, frankly, ridiculous proposals on the exclusivity of a car with different trim options compared to a fully engineered unique car. But then I work in design not marketing so I would see it like that

^ Agreed. Doesn't matter if the intention was to build a set 7k, or build as they sold, because they were not building them in the hundreds of thousands in preperation of long term sales. It wasn't going to be a properly developed and reproduced multi phase car. They built roughly 1700 of them each year.

That is quite a specialist line to have what, just 148 cars rolling off a month? Even the pressing of the shells would have been an expense, as it is far cheaper to make them en masse than a few thousand of a unique design. And all the other gubbins.

Ok. There are far better examples of 'pure' limited production runs, with nice numbered plates yada yada etc. That does not detract from the fact this car was limited, because of whatever market terms or marketing decisions, in its production.

Was a unique platform, and I doubt there are even half the number left around that were built.

As for the 'myth', I didn't realise there was one.

I don't even care for it that much never been a fan of Ford, however I think some comparisons in here are a bit out of place.

Hell look what Rs200 shells can go for!!
