Just look at the blackhole that is the NHS if you want an example of true money wasting... Back OT now...

Does anyone know if there are any deployed in Iraq?

There probably are, but the MOD wont make it public, as it is still a relatively new and secretive airplane. I guess they might of played a key part in Shock and Awe?

Looks like this thread is going off on a tangent? Shame.

But back to the Typhoon ... I've seen an early demonstrator a few years ago at the RAF Leuchars air show, and it put up a very impressive performance (even on the Tornado engines it used back then) Easily more manoeuvrable than the F16's and Mig 29 on display.

If you think the Eurofighter (who's cost is shared with other European countries) is a waste of money, check out the price of a single US F22 Raptor :eek

That last point is an interesting one. The expected export price of the raptor is about 130 million dollars, or about 70 million quid.

The RAF have paid 16 billion pounds for 232 typhoons, or 68 million pounds each.

SO to suggest that the typhoon is in any way 'cheap' compared with the Raptor is nonsense.

The Raptor can only do a few tasks though... The Eurofighter can do almost everything. This means less different types of planes are needed.. less engineers to maintain them.. do you see where I'm going with this? It works out cheaper in the long run.

The thing that most impresses me is the Meteor BVRAAM (Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile) that the Eurofighter will be able to use - A reported range of 100km+

The americans had a missile capable of jitting a target of 150km+ back in 1974.(The Phoenix)

We've taken 30 years to manage 2/3 of the performance......

The Soviet Union is Defunct, but the new planes coming from russia are scary, and they sell to anybody these days.

Ever see a plane fly backards? This should be an eye opener, this is 35 tons of russian metal beating the sky into submission.........

its is unlikely that they will be deployed to Iraq, Tornados + harriers are handling that situation nicely
As for people saying things like could be better spent elsewhere, well your partially right, but the supposed 16Bn procurement cost over the last 20 years that this project has been on the books is marginal comapred to the near 90Bn per annum that the NHS already gets. sorry ill stop, as you can probably tell im quite pro our nations military and they dont get nearly enough respect from the people they protect
[/endrant]
but yeah this aircraft is awesome, to say it is loud is an understatement!

"Capable" as in, no wind, no clouds, a full moon, the Apache Chief's approval and some scientists in lab coats standing near by? Yeah...

Wheras the British missile has a proven combat record?

Quick tip - a comparative criticism only really works if its not applicable to *both* cases ;)

Sorry where is that aircraft ever flying backwards?

All it is doing is stalling at given intervals, as with the eurofighter all of its flight controls are computerised, nothing major there with modern air craft, also I think the Typhoon (not eurofighter any more) or the f-22 raptor will out manouver it,

or potentiall the most agile aircraft at the moment is the lockheed martin X35, were getting it in this country to go on our next generation of aircraft carriers :D

The JSF, or JSA as I think its called now.

They are also going to be based on land up here in RAF Lossiemouth.

It would have been even better in the era it was designed for.

The money would have paid for a hell of a lot of doctors and nurses, instead of something designed to attack the now-defunct Soviet Union.
lol. Just lol.
