External Sound card for 2014 iMac

Hi everyone. I’ve recently picked up a 2014 iMac from a friend.
I already own a set of Acoustic Energy Aego M speakers from years ago (they are great so I want to keep them).
unfortunately I find the iMac sound a bit lacking (I was used to a Xonar d2 setup) from my old pc.

I’m new to imac, so are there any external sound cards which are compatible with both the iMac and my speakers?

Not sure if there are external sound cards, only I connected mine through an Amp using a Toslink to Mini Toslink Cable plugged into the headphone port on the iMac.

Earlier iMac's have this feature (I think it was dropped by Apple for later models) so that you could use the optical input feature on your amp to improve the sound?

Yeah any USB sound system should work with drivers, I have a sound blaster X7 paired with a decent set of KEF speakers, works great
