I went for the 9500 too. It's a trade off between the FZ's IS or the s9500 higher ISO. Have a play with them both in a shop, there's not much between them.

He might also want to consider a D50 with kit lens for a little more (around £450). Wont get the same zoom range tho but a new lens can be bought at a later time.

Still using my 'other' s9500 after Colin_da_Killer bought mine. ( i actually bought two of them - one for my brother, but he never had the money to pay for it, so i ended up using it)

It feels very SLR like, but not as fast obviously (focus speed, file saving, etc)

The manual zoom is nice with a good feel to it - so much better than a f'ly by wire' zoom.

I also found out this week that it works well with an R72 Hoya Infra Red Filter (results posted soon)

As has been said, go and have a play and see which 'fits', and decide if you prefer high ISO over longer zoom and OIS (both have their advantages and disadvantages)
