Actually, the dead note first rose to prominence after a young David Hasselhoff heard it being played by an old hermit during a family holiday in Bavaria as a young boy. He worked on it for years trying to find the best power ballad with which to unleash it on the world.

But did he have to keep inflicting us with dead notes with his singing voice :)
