Hard drive not allowing computer to power up

Hi all, first post in a long time!

Have had a customer report a problem accessing his external hard drive, so I've opened the enclosure and connected it to a PC, now when I try to power on the machine it is completely dead. When I remove the hard drive and do an ATX reset the machine comes back.

I have repeated it a few times with the same result.

Any ideas?

its probably a failed drive if its not letting pc boot up

Did you try plugging it in when pc is on? If your mb has hotswap you can do that,same if its Usb drive

Unfortunately it's an old board so I did it while the PC was off.
