With all the furore over the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal, do you believe that social media has been a network positive or negative on the world?

I think Facebook which is using a real ID and has a like/dislike system is terrible, for the most part it's basically people posting whatever opinion will get them the most kudos and just not posting when they realise they have an unpopular opinion (self-censorship).

Twitter is not so bad because people can use aliases and aren't as terrified of posting something that will wind up with them getting socially castigated for the smallest wrongthink comment.

By and large it's a system that allows a false 'consensus' to form and then when stuff like Brexit and Trump happens all of those who thought they were in a massive majority become unhinged and push Russia conspiracies because they can't fathom why a censored/controlled environment like social media and reality are not the same.

Do you guys honestly think Trump is acting without advice from his military generals and strategists that his government is packed with?

In the North Korea thread, it's a bit rich you accusing others of having a limited grasp on reality. It also shows you don't pay attention to what's actually happening, preferring to base your version of reality on what you think should be happening. (It's well documented that Trump A) doesn't take advice B) Shoots his mouth off without discussing it with anyone C) Contradicts himself and the official line on a daily basis.)

As for "Russian Conspiracies"

The Senate Intelligence Committee has unequivocally upheld the conclusion of the intelligence community that Russia developed a "clear preference" for then-candidate Donald Trump in the 2016 election and sought to help him win the White House.

The assessment, announced in an unclassified summary released Tuesday, represents a direct repudiation of the committee’s counterpart in the House — and of President Trump himself, who has consistently rejected assertions that Moscow sought to bolster his candidacy through its election interference.

“The Committee has spent the last 16 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft and analytic work underpinning the Intelligence Community Assessment and sees no reason to dispute the conclusions,” said Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said in a statement.

"A body of reporting, to include different intelligence disciplines, open source reporting on Russian leadership policy preferences, and Russian media content, showed that Moscow sought to denigrate Secretary Clinton," the unclassified summary reads.

Would it be possible to create a poll?

it started out great but has basically just become a selling tool and just bait for everything good and bad.

Depends on how you use it. Using it for something like an animal rescue charity then clearly it's a good thing, whereas your average attention seeking narcissist posting her umpteenth duck faced selfie of the day then it's a bad thing.

One thing that has got my goat about facebook is the recent advert that is doing the rounds, how it shouldn't used for data mining and fake new etc...well if it hadn't come to light what was going on with it then they'd still be allowing it to happen. It's not like they've had a sudden change of heart, it's because they got caught, and now it's all kissing ill relatives, and proposing on the top of a cliff, while some sincere sounding bloke rattles on about what it should be used for. They aren't lecturing us on it's uses for our benefit, it's done to restore investor confidence, nothing more.
