Just as a general comment I really like them all, I think number 4 with the crane definately tops the bill for me somehow though

Is the sky photoshopped in or is it an effect of the HDR?

The sky in the original just looks completely different to the HDR version.

I don't ever do things like that

The reason why the sky looks different is because I only posted the balanced exposure image. It takes 3 images to generate a HDR shot. One 2 stops under-exposed. One 2 stops over and one normal photo.

It helps to bring out the shadow and highlight detail in everything and then combines them. So you can get far better detail in the sky than you could from a normal photo. This is basically my aim with HDR. To be able to use it to develop photos that don't look like HDR shots but look like they have more detail than normal shots.

The thing with those photos is they seem to have started off looking pretty good too. I suppose the key to a good HDR is to have a decent photo to begin with

Yes Its hard for a new person to know what HDR is because everyones doing it and because it relys on such an ammount of tone processing your finding that everyones hdr is differernt. However the basic principles of HDR is purly multipue photos stiched as one.. The effect is totally user preference.

I had my first go at HDR a few days ago using a car as the subject. The effect was to match a lot of other HDR car shots but for my own wants and personal use I would like to just use the HDR effect as a means to fix blown out areas and deep shadow casts (which I have been doing for a long time now using duplicate layers in photoshop)

Great series cykey. Many subjects captured beautifully.

I assume you used a tripod then? how can you ensure that you dont move between shots if not?

While it takes 3 images to produce a HDR shot I generate it from a single RAW file. I did experiment with trying to get 3 RAW shots without a tripod as I didn't want to lug that around all the time but as fast as my camera is it wasn't fast enough. Maybe a 20/30D or JPEG would be faster.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread... well erm not really, they are all excellent shots

but I have a question I would like to ask you - Are you ever worried about being mugged for your camera and gear you must be carrying around with you in Liverpool city centre?

I live in Runcorn and I know city centre Liverpool, or any big city centre for that matter are not places I would choose to wander around with expensive gear. Or am I just being a wuss?

Wow old thread. Basically no, I don't feel bothered. Unless you setup a camera and tripod infront of say 10 or more chavs you won't have a problem.
