Help with a Gaming Desktop PLEASE!

Hi...

So i'm pretty much a total novice when it comes to specs.

I want a new desktop that can run games at max settings with high FPS at up to 4K.
I also want something that is going to is going to last a few years which can be upgraded.

What do you think of this?

Hi, thanks for that!

I maybe want to keep the
Intel Core i7 8700K @ 4.9GHz

as its the newest generation and will be able to keep up to date longer. Having said that. Would it be good to keep everything else you have suggested? And would this run games at 4K in highest quality?

The i7 8700K contradicts to your previous requirement about the system being upgradeable.
If you want to further upgrade that machine, you will have to change the motherboard too.

Also, for 4K gaming, you don't need an OC processor because the games become GPU bound.

I'm looking to spend around £2000. I'd prefer not to build myself, to make life easier and have warranty. I currently use a TV for gaming, but am looking at also purchasing a 4K monitor.

So the i7 8700K cannot be upgraded without upgrading the motherboard?

I've heard MMO's in particular use processing power..... is that true?

Core components - add storage as you wish
Aorus 7 boards features best audio on the z370 platform and pretty much all first reviews for 8700k used an Aorus board . 8 Pack ram which you can OC highly and zoatc amp is a beast of a card and price

Binned and de-lid chip- firstly it'll be in stock quicker, secondly the chip runs hot

Epic case that you can have the layout how you want it

And entry step into watercooling :)

You will be fine with a 6 core cpu. I would actually suggest the i5 8600K if going with Intel as it is pretty evenly matched to the 8700K from what I have seen. Also at 4K the gpu is more important.

You should also consider Ryzen as a good alternative. An R5 1600 and SLI ready X370 board should work out a bit cheaper.


i5 8600K spec

You would need to change a couple of things with Customer Services.

The Motherboard make/model isn't stated so you would need to know if it is SLI ready. Also you will need a higher wattage psu of around 750W/850W for SLI. The one in the spec is listed as 650W.

If he is not doing any streaming or video editing etc then the R5 1600 is a better choice as it will perform the same as the R7 when gaming.

Why 32GB Ram ? That is totally unnecessary for a gaming pc.

The 960 EVO is a bit of a luxury as well. Won't do any harm to leave it in but it isn't going to make a night and day difference over a SATA SSD.

That case burns my eyes out. Also it is a bit cheap and plastic looking for a £2K build.

You can get a far better psu than that Corsair CX. A Bitfenix Whisper for example is only an extra £4.

The case is with a very beautiful design, eye catching and so on.
2000 but 700 of it go for the graphics card alone? Perfectly fine case for 50. There are also cheaper.

The case looks like something a 12 year old kid would choose, but each to their own.

Well if he is going to be gaming at 4K what other gpu is going to cut it ? A GTX 1080 ti will just about fit in the budget.

Just because it says up to 32GB Ram doesn't mean he needs it. A 2 x 8GB Kit is fine.

Thanks so much for all your replies. But just clarify i would like to keep the costs down as much as possible. So for instance, the case doesn't matter to me visually, so if a case that's uglier is cheaper then that's fine by me. Noise reduction however is quite important!

I also don't want any changes to MASSIVELY affect performance. maybe by a few FPS but thats all.

As I explained earlier, I am a total novice with these thing, but all of the suggestions mentioned are really helpful.

Also, this PC will have to last me the next few years.... I just want to be able to upgrade the odd part every couple of years to keep it up to date. Having said this, do all of these suggestions still stand?

dont know if your after a self build, a build for pay someone to put together or simply a prebuilt, but i went with the self build option for now.

its nice to see the i3 now comes in a quad so should be decent, but went with the i3 as it kicks starts you off with the new coffee lake tech to try out, gives you an upgrade path to the i7 and simply the i7 are out of stock or pre-order, dont know how lower than that prebuilt you linked us to, but put in the cheapest in stock 1080ti going, which makes much cheaper, obviously if you want to keep it under £1500 or around £1000 then the 1080ti is out the question, but will last you a good few years.

oh and had i went for a mech drive even of 2tb for secondary, it wouldve saved you nearly £200.

I5 8600k ore built from OCUK will do you fine. Games wise it'll beat Ryzen 1600/700 mostly and you don't have to bump up prices to get 3000/3200hz ram as intels core design is better- although getting nice timings does help !
And if you like games like Arma... Core speed is everything !

I5 8600k + 16GB + 1080 Ti or even Vega 64 pre-built will do you fine.. freesync screens are much much much much much cheaper. And if you planning a build, with that kind of performance , you'd want an amd freesync or Nvidia G-sync monitor with it
If not be like driving a Lamborghini in 20moh zone with speed bumps

No, it won't. There are so many hard evidence that with Intel processors with low-cores count, you get microstuttering in games, quite annoying stops of the game play. Which with Ryzen are not present.

Low core count ? 6 cores..... Six Intel cores.... Don't get me wrong I routed for AMD and I'm so pleased for them. Although Vega was a nightmare and asking partners to take lower then expected profits is just plain wrong !
Plus more people buying into 8400 instead of K version of 8600 and 8700 will slowly change Intel practises . 8400 and Ryzen 1600 chips are stonking CPU! And the b350 boards, wow, only thing that's a let down for 8400 is having to use a z370 board. We're a few more boards at £109 range which then got raised about an hour in :/

There's plenty of reviews of 8400 Vs Ryzen Vs K versions out there. Do some googling

I've got 1600 and 8400 builds on order :)

And at 4k most modern games are optimised for Intel i5s (4 cores) and have less stress on them - again through reviews you can see amd working with studios to optimise Ryzen cpus with games

6 Intel threads vs 16 AMD threads. Don't get me wrong but only a BLIND Intel supporter would recommend that crap.
There are enough YouTube videos explaining the poor microstutter on i7-7700K which has even more threads - up to 8 compared to the 8600K with its 6.

I'd personally buy a 1600 or 1700 + CH6 and a 3000/3200 memory kit. This is what I'd personally buy and yes I would now buy AMD over Intel, I simply see Ryzen as the far more future proof CPU and the Ryzen CPU also makes games appear smoother irrelevant of what the FPS score is showing and smoothness is everything.

For me the perfect solution is:
R5 1600 + RX 480 (580 soon if rumours to be true ;) ) + 8G/16G 3000MHz RAM + 370 series mainboard. For the money especially with a FREESYNC monitor you get a totally awesome gaming experience.
