How important is English when job hunting?

I got an E and a U in 'O' level English and never found it a problem with jobs - my two degrees helped. :)

We had a graduate with a GCSE A in English a couple of years ago. It rather depressed me that I had to keep correcting his written ministerial submissions.

They dont care about gcse's

hmmm, my uni asked for maths and english at grade C or above and it wasn't a particualrly good uni, obviously most courses involve essay writing and certainly with business basic number work, if i was the op i would pros take a year or two out before applying for uni if thats what he wants to do and retake as part of a distance learning course, save some money too as uni is expensive.
