I got my job through my dad, Started as a work experience placement when I was at collage and developed into a part time then full time job as Local IT admin

Several years ago I got a job in IT working in a local school (which then fed me into teaching, which is what I do and love now) but I got that job thanks to the old boys network. Someone I knew was married to one of the governors.
The headmistress actually admitted about 2 years later that if she had gone on interview I wouldn't have got the job (I was a nervous wreck) but the recommendation got me in. Once I was in, the whole staff loved the work I did - nothing too big or small for me to do to help them!
Go fo it and don't panic about the old boys network working for you. Enjoy the chance it gives

It's not what you know but who you know. Forget meritocracy as it never seems to take place in smaller companies to be honest.
