I can't get my 920 past 3.6ghz before it comes unstable. I've changed ram multiplier down to 6x, tried all type of voltages on vcore, ram and vtt, nothing works. The cpu temp under prime95 @ 3.8ghz doesn't get to 67c before it crashes so would I be right in guessing the problem is either the ram or chipset that's overheating? I have a bog standard coolermaster elite case with just the exhaust fan. Thanks for any help.
Try building the system outside the case and see if you can get it any further to help confirm/deny your thought. You could also try instlaling some extra fans in that case, surely you have at least one intake ? If not you should get one anyway.
maybe its a bad chip, if your worried about heat (which i doubt it is) then leave the side panel off and even have a desk fan blowing at it and then try what board are you using? chip a d0?
Thanks guys. I don't have an intake no, and my wires inside aren't exactly completely tucked away yet. The 920 is a brand new D0 though. Have you turned off EIST and CIE? Uncore set to double your memory? I keep posting this, but I believe you can't go wrong if you have a good read of it and take some notes http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/538439-guide-overclocking-core-i7-920-4-a.html
