i7 950 with 4x4gb dual/quad ram kit

Is it possible to upgrade to this ram configuration as i don't want to upgrade to more triple channel ram as it seems everything is moving quad/dual

would these be compatible

found this while searching around and is this correct, so seems i could use 4 ram sticks in triple channel. just need to make sure that is correct and if there could be any problems with this configuration.

i7 950
3x2gb patriot vipers
x58 asus sabertooth
7970 x3 windforce

Looking at the Asus manual you can operate with 4 dimm slots in operation. A2, A1, B1 and C1 have to be populated.

Are you struggling with only 6gb of ram?

Thats simply because that is what the newer chipsets support. Tri Channel is still the best configuration for X58 motherboard. (The Ram is no different, it has just been tested to make sure it will work in that configuration dual/tri/quad)

i do quite abit of 3d modelling (3ds max) and seems to always max my ram and got a new cpu cooler (dark rock pro 2) so having to take the heat spreaders off my ram, so there is a chance i could break them. Also as well ill be upgrading my cpu and mb later this year

I went from triple channel 6GB 1600 kit to an 8GB 2133 dual channel setup and didn't notice much difference really. I actually sold my triple channel kit for £10 more than the 8GB set cost me so made money.

I have used this on X58 for a bit of benching to see if it would run (A bit of overkill).

I only used 3 sticks though for maximum efficiency, my 980x ran it all the way to 2374mhz.

+1-3 sticks are the best set up, as the 4th does not run as fast as the other 3 sticks.
