Importing photos to Photos

So, it turns out I have no idea how Photos behaves.

Earlier I imported some photos from a folder on my Mac to Photos, and for some reason it imported them into Photostream (and when I checked Photostream on my iPad, sure enough there they were) - is this normal? It's been a while since I used Photos but I don't remember it doing this in the past. I don't really want them appearing there.

Also, Photostream (on my Mac) only seems to go back a month whereas on my iPhone/iPad it goes back about a thousand photos, does Photostream behave differently on a Mac?

Finally, I've got about half my photos sorted in to albums, is there a way to view just those photos that don't appear in albums anywhere so I can sort them in to albums/delete?

From what I remember photo stream is the old way photos were shared. It's now iCloud Photo Library. This will store all your photos in the cloud and shared between all your devices.

There is a setting to disable photo stream.
