Time to spell out some th usual pointers.... :p

  • Whisky = Scottish, no other country should call it whisky (minor exceptions)
  • Whiskey = from a nywhere else, mostly US an Ireland
  • Hence, Irish stuff spelt whiskey
  • Cheap whisky or whiskey can be mixed freely
  • Real Whisky, and the best whiskeys should never ever be mixed with anything apart from pure spring water.
  • Never, ever, ever add ice to malt whisky, it imparts the delicate flavour
  • Single malt is the good stuff, but don't waste you time with £8-15 bottles, Famouse grouse would be better to mix or drink!
  • Blends are made from a mix of different malt whiskies and mostly grain spirit which is cheap to make
  • Glen Fiddich is NOT a good whisky....

I think you mean impairs :) Imparting the flavour would be a good thing hence why a little pure spring water can be added to a malt so that it may be tasted better.

I'm not a big whisk(e)y drinker at any time but would also say that contrary to a lot of what has been said in this thread you should drink your drink however you like it. It is for enjoyment purposes so whether or not it is blasphemous to add coke to Laphroaig(and it almost certainly is) if that is how you like it then drink it that way, you are paying through the nose as it is so you might as well get it how you like it. :)
