Is the Ryzen 9 3900X still good enough with the release of Ryzen 5000 CPU´s?

Hello,

I´m currently unsure if i should be waiting until i can get a Ryzen 9 5900X (seems very unlikely since it´s almost impossible to get one in germany) or is a Ryzen 9 3900X still a very good purchase? it´s currently going for 399 Euro in germany so that´s quite a chunk less than a 5900X? I want to upgrade my PC next week during the black friday/cyber monday deals so there might be still no way to get a 5900X... what do u guys think? Should i wait until there is stock for a 5900X (about 150 Euro more than for a 3900X currently) or is the 3900X enough for gaming/workloads for the next few years?

Also incase i should get the 3900X, which mainboard should i buy? X470, B550 or X570?

It's a very good cpu. New release doesn't make current CPUs bad. I've got one and it flies.

3900x is a fantastic chip. I did upgrade my b450 tomahawk motherboard to a b550 Tomahawk and you do get more from the 3900x on the newer "better quality" boards. Sustained clocks are better but I upgraded my motherboard mainly because I needed to build another ryzen system. 5900x I'll be looking at towards end of 2021.

It's still a great CPU, in fact exactly the same awesome CPU it was last month. Software hasn't suddenly become more demanding overnight.

Also, I'd spend the extra and buy an X570 motherboard. Just in case you do decide to upgrade and get SAM in future. In the meantime, PCIe4 etc.

In choosing 3900X, you should be able to get a decent "bundle deal" of m'board and cpu for less than buying separately.

Is that really worth it tho? I was planning to keep the 3900X for like 3-5 years (depends on how necessary a upgrade will be in the future) and since i´d have to upgrade my whole system again when i´m going for the new AMD CPU`s, is a more expensive mainboard really that much better? i don´t plan to overclock the 3900X either.

The main advantage with X570 is more pcie lanes. That's the reason I went X570. The 3900x is still a great cpu, I'll probably have mine for the next 5 years.

I game at 4K on an RTX 2080 and I bought (or at least ordered) a 5900X at 14:12 on release day but the order didn't process fast enough via Paypal. So instead of being one of the early "lucky" buyers I ended up in queue position 968. Two weeks later I was in queue position 888 and just cancelled my order.

Now in hindsight I am happy I did because at 4K there is no difference in any recent CPUs, even with an RTX 3090. I did see these reviews on release day but just wanted something shiny and new. Now I am perfectly happy waiting to see how it goes when I get an RTX 3080 or 6800XT at some point.

So yes, the 3900X is still a great CPU if gaming is your main thing and even content creation is great.

3900X is still great, it's just not a great idea to buy one now.

Don't get caught up in market/black friday hype, just wait a bit longer and get a much better CPU that won't keep you wondering "should I have waited".

In the meantime, play old games/console games that you've been meaning to play for years but never got round to

IMO at least, hope your happy which ever route you chose.

While i would love to get a 5900X it's also quite a lot more expensive (150-200 more for me + very hard to get a 5900X currently) and since i want a CPU with a lot multi core performance there is sadly no truly high end option expect for the 3900X which i might even get a new one for 350 Euro... it's honestly just a way too good deal currently. I'm also playing on 1440p so for games the difference between a 3900X and 5900X as far as I've seen is just few % which isn't that bad for me.

Still thank you very much for the advice! Maybe i upgrade to a 5900X next year when there is stock and i get a decent price for my 3900X.

Consider 5800X
Much closer to 3900X in price, not much slower in multithreaded tasks while massively better for gaming. Availability should be better than 5900X too.

3900X doesn't seem to be a good purchase right now. If you had one already, sure it is still good enough for years to come. But buying new? No

What do you use your PC for? If it is solely gaming even a 3900x will be overkill. You’d probably be fine with a 3700x / 5600x / 5800x. 3900x is not suddenly a bad CPU because new ones have arrived.
