Hi All,
I'm an iTunes noob, and also technically challenged,
basically all of my music is stored on my external hardrive,
when I go into iTunes to obviously play my music it keeps saying cannot locate
this track or something similar. I have tried plugging hardrive in at different points while starting iTunes up but it won't work,

Does anyone have any suggestions? because at the minute im using WMP instead and it's highly frustrating.

Apologies if there has been a similar thread, I did search.

I'd start be clearing out your library and re-importing everything.

If it hasn't worked for ages then this would be a good step, it's possible when you first imported all your music you had a different drive letter assigned to your external harddrive for some reason, so iTunes can't find that location anymore.

  1. Start with iTunes closed
  2. Find the original iTunes directory (User>Home>Music) or (Libraries>Music>iTunes)
  3. Move the whole folder to the external drive.
  4. Now open iTunes but hold the cmd key (alt on PC) and it'll ask you to locate or create a new iTunes library
  5. Click "Locate" and navigate to the iTunes Library.xml file in that directory you just moved (on the external drive).

If you want to get rid of the exclamation marks/errors.. click the "Consolidate library" option in the iTunes "Advanced" menu.
