Hi, my Acer Aspire 1400's power supply seems to be sparking alot whenever I plug in the power cord. I have to jiggle it around a fair amount before it will turn on. Furthermore, the battery seems to be dead as the laptop will only work when it is plugged in. Could these problems be related or is the battery definately dead. When it turns on and I don't move it it seems to work fine!

Get a new PSU, I'd say.
